The YMCA of East Tennessee is proud to offer American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Courses that prepare you to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Whether you’re pursuing a job as a lifeguard or simply want to gain lifesaving skills, our courses combine hands-on practice with professional instruction.

Lifeguard Certification Courses

Our comprehensive course trains participants in water rescue skills, CPR, AED, and First Aid — everything you need to become a certified lifeguard at the Y or any aquatic facility.
Course Details
- Certification: American Red Cross Lifeguard, valid for 2 years
- Duration: 25–30 hours, typically held over 2–3 days
- Ages: Participants must be 15 years or older before the final day of class
- Format: 8 hours of online learning prior to in-person classroom learning, in-water skill sessions, and hands-on rescue practice.
Prerequisites
Before the first day of class, participants must be able to:
- Complete a 200-yard swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest. Swim 150 yards, tread water for 2 minutes, swim 50 yards.
- Retrieve a 10-pound brick from 7-10 feet of water and swim it back to the wall. Exit the pool without a ladder within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
- Complete online learning.
CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification

In addition to full lifeguard certification, the YMCA offers standalone CPR, AED, and First Aid Training throughout the year.
These classes are ideal for coaches, childcare staff, and community members who want to be prepared in emergencies.
